Dialogue in Play with the Power Primes

Lately the Power Primes have been playing a lot of games in the classroom that involve feasting, candy, and cooking up spicy hot chocolate. During their feast they often gather around a table in our dramatic play corner. They haul over chairs and stools so they can all have a seat at the table together. Below are some of the things they said while gathered around the table.

Ollie: There’s cupcakes!

Jack: I’m gonna make my spicy hot cocoa

Nua: Bah bah bah bah bah bah

Simon: I’m gonna make some hot cocoa

Ollie: It’s my birthday

Jack: Who wants candy!?

Simon: Here’s the cupcakes here’s the cupcakes

Ollie: It’s only my birthday and Pearly’s birthday

Cate: It’s your birthday

Simon: babbbaaabba

Jack: I’m a boy

Cate: If you are a boy you can’t get one of these crowns

Jack: I’m a girl

Cate: No you are a boy, Ollie do you want this crown? I’m sorry

Pearl: Ollie is a girl. I’m a girl. She’s a girl (pointing to Cate) He’s a boy (pointing to Jack)

Elende: I’m just going to remind you all that everyone gets to decide for themselves what gender they are.

Nua: I’m him I’m him

Phino: I’m they and them

August: Oh here is an orange!

Cate: Ollie, you wanted a crown right? Pearl you wanted a crown

Pearl: Okay. Yeah

August: I got a crown

Cate: Who wants a crown?

Nua: I want it!

Cate: Okay!

Ollie: Who wants a cupcake?

Pearl: Me! Jack you can have the cupcake

Nua: I want cupcake

Simon: I don’t have so much

Ollie: Do you want a cupcake? (asking Simon)

Jack: I want another cupcake

Nua: There’s a dinosaur in this game

Pearl: There are no dinosaurs in this game

Cate: Yup. No dinosaurs in this game

Pearl: No dinosaurs

Nua: There is!

Pearl: No Nua there are no dinosaurs in this game

Cate: Elende, Nua says there are dinosaurs

Elende: Who makes the rules in the game?

Cate: I’m doing the rules. Pearl wants me to make the rules

Nua: I want to do the rules

Cate: I gave you millions of blocks

This piece of dialogue is a great example of what it sounds like to play when you are in the Power Primes classroom. It’s exciting to read through this and hear all the different ways the Power Primes are engaging in play. Through games like these the Power Primes are learning how to share space, be flexible, be inclusive, think creatively, and stand up for themselves. They are all playing this ‘feast’ game together but they all are having different experiences of the game. So much learning is taking place here!
