Uppers on the Farm!

The Uppers returned to Red Gate Farm last week for a few rousing, albeit rainy days of fun. Having gone many times now, we, both the students and the teachers, had a deeper and quicker uptake at the farm. We belted out the song about the food at each meal as we already knew the words. Students knew to go for it with the farm experiences (see below the photo of Eva and the chickens). And when it was just us Center Schoolers having down time in the dorm, the vibes were off the charts.

As one of many last hurrahs we do in the final weeks of school, Red Gate allows for the broadening and deepening of relationships in a way that only a 3 day, 25 person sleepover can. Students got makeovers, found quiet times to heal hurting friendships, and did some good ol' fashioned storytelling to their peers who sat on the floor in front of them.

Farmer Ben, who gives off the serious and industrious attitude of a lifelong farmer, combined with the clarity and approachability of a career educator, shared some insights about the experience the staff are looking to create. It's one where the bar for success changes to meet every student. Some students will jump at the chance to work with their hands, others will be less eager but still want to be present, be seen. Some will balk at spending a night away from home, while others can't wait for the chance to feel one more level of independence. Staff at Redgate make sure the experience can meet all these students and more without judgement and plenty of compassion. This dynamic happens at our school too and it is always reassuring to know that the unwritten rules of engagement with tweens were well known in this neck of the woods too.
