Justice, Equity, Diversity
Dear Friends,
Is there a hipper way to say, “I am a lifelong learner?” If so, I am not aware of one, so I will lean into this somewhat overused expression. I'm owning my inner nerd. Last week I was released by my Admin cohort, who are AMAZING at their jobs and always welcome me back from time in the field with absolutely no shade. With the teachers and students in excellent hands I motored over the snowy mountain pass that is also known as Route 2, and up 95 to Portsmouth, NH, to a Heads of School conference. 100 school leaders gathered to share ideas, to take workshops, and to reflect on innovative educational practices. One of the best workshops I attended was about school leaders being key conduits of social justice and diversity, equity, and anti racism work in their schools. I learned a lot. It was particularly illuminating to me that the most galvanizing points were also the most challenging. “You have to have help. You have to build connections. You have to look at your school and be willing to accept that change may be slow or incremental.” 1) I am not great at asking for help. I have in the past felt awkward in asking for help with DEJIB work because I want to just KNOW what to do and do it. 2) I especially do not want to burden our community members of color. That is a huge one. And finally, 3) I am impatient and want things to move fast! In short, I need to shift my thinking, and I must reach out!
We are looking for a Chair, and additional members, for JED. We are also, ALWAYS, looking for feedback on how you think the Center School is doing in the work for social justice, most specifically our anti-racism work. The more voices, the more critical feedback, the stronger the school and its mission and program will be. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with your opinions, suggestions, passions, or hopes regarding this work. We are stronger and better together.
In solidarity,
Charlie
