Lights up on All School!

Dear Friends,

Two and a half years ago, the lights went dark on our All School stage. Try as we might to keep the flame aglow through a valiant series of video All Schools complete with puppets, über-creative teachers, and virtual sing-alongs, over the course of the first year of the pandemic, it just wasn’t the same. Last year, despite our greatest hopes to resume in-person All Schools, we weren’t ready to bring a large group together indoors. So, we found new ways to connect our classroom communities with hallway art installations, massive messages made of paper snowflakes and hearts, a school-wide collection for the war victims in Ukraine. We made the best of things.

Fast forward to now.... Curtain up! Light the lights…. I had a dream baby… A dream about you…. Last Friday, after two practice All Schools led by yours truly, the kids hit the boards! They were swell, they were great! Under the leadership of five amazing Uppers, we played epic Pictionary, made a human rainbow using all of us (Mups-Uppers. Primes will join soon!), sang songs with our whole hearts, laughed, cried, bubble-breathed, and jumped for joy. It was… it was… well…. let’s just say my keyboard is wet as I write this. My heart burst as the peace candle was lit by a radiant, fearless 12-year-old bedazzled in head to toe rainbow. We had finally come home.

I looked around in an ecstatic daze after the “going out song” was sung, humming and stacking chairs, when a lovely new dad walked over to me as if walking on air and said, “You mean this happens every week?” I nodded, beaming. “I’m clearing my Friday morning schedule. Save me a seat.”

Can’t wait to share the goosebumps with all of you soon.

With delight,

Charlie Spencer
