8th Graders Take New York!!
Last Thursday, the 8th grade went on a fantastic all-day trip to New York City to see the Tony-award winning musical adaptation of The Outsiders. It was an epic adventure!
We left early in the morning and arrived home under cover of night. We endured a rattly bus, many traffic jams, ancient DVD technology and chilly weather. We were entranced by the bright lights and crowds of Times Square; enjoyed dumplings, sushi and curries at a cool Singapore style food court called Urban Hawker; saw signs of spring in Central Park and of course, saw the play!
It was so amazing to see this story that we've spent so much time with this year interpreted in a different way. The kids loved the stagecraft (fire! rain! flashing lights! choreography!), the music, and the storytelling. We had different opinions about changes that the playwrights made to the original text and it was fun to debate it on the ride home and the next day. Seeing live theater with students is always one of my favorite things to get to do here at Center School! The power of being in a room together with all of the actors, musicians, and dancers is unlike anything else.
We are so thankful for everyone who bought a raffle ticket to help fund our trip! And a big thank you to Oliver Miller, who organized the whole shebang, as well as Chris, Zephyr and Rachel for coming with us.
